Final Year Project
Project Title
Public Markets as Community Spaces: Street Markets of Karimabad as a Place of Extra-economic Conversations for Women
Description
Street markets are a place, a way of life, and a magnet for social and economic activities. They can serve several purposes at one time and so are considered as a multipurpose tool for social, economic, and community development. The research was focused in the Karimabad neighborhood which is located in the Central district of Karachi, Pakistan. It is situated at south of Gulberg Town bordering Liaquatabad, Gharibabad and Federal B. Area. The sample primarily consisted of women who visit street markets for getting daily grocery. The research will also make use of pictures as a means of putting forth and presenting ethnographic information and insight of the market. The research concluded that the reason for visiting a market is to buy products, even if they also enjoy markets for social reasons, a diversity of traders and products will clearly also influence a market's success as a social space.
